Slowing Down
Each year I create a stat card—part annual report, part creative reflection—to track the play-by-play of my work. It helps me see how far I’ve come. Starting something new brings adrenaline, ideas, and pressure in equal measure. After reviewing my 2024 stats, I realized it was time to slow down. The challenge now isn’t motivation—it’s learning how to pace the ideas that keep pouring in.

Introduction Time…
I’m Heather Westbrook, a Hawaiʻi-based photographer and designer exploring nature in art and art in nature. Rooted in both Michigan and Hawaiʻi, my work blends photography, pattern design, and storytelling to highlight the beauty of place and culture. Inspired by turtles, I create at a slow-and-burst rhythm—observing closely, then moving with intention.

Fostering an Artist's Work
Once life slowed down in December, I reached out to Charlie to see if his office wall's were still open. Now the Hilo Tax and Accounting Service office in downtown Hilo has photographs of local flora and fauna bringing in some color to the once bare walls. In a way, you could say my artwork is being fostered.

Shifting Products
I have decided to stop producing some products once inventory is gone (e.g., cards, bibs, matted prints) and have limited editions of other products (e.g., bandanas and some designs on tea towels). I will always be a person that craves novelty and openly embraces change. I can't stop the ideas from flowing and do want to incorporate ideas that I hear from my customers.

Shifting Designs
With HW Designs entering its 3rd holiday season, I have been contemplating shifts for some time that need to occur. As the Kamaʻāina Collection grows to 26 designs this November, the increasing number of products across all designs has become challenging to manage, both due to limited storage space and the demands of overseeing such a large inventory. So with that in mind, 4 designs (Hoe Wa'a, 'Uluhe, Hau Kea, and Pāpale Niu) will be moving to the "vault" to make room for new

HW Design Layers
HW Designs was born to explore nature in art and art in nature—capturing the beauty of the natural world and culture through creativity and education. While digital illustration is my primary medium, my work extends into photography, graphic design, and trash art. Events like the Hilo Pop-Up Art Show allow me to push beyond my usual practice, explore new creative layers, and support meaningful community causes.
